Experience

Tutored math for a number of years (with great success) before taking a break. Now I'm back and ready to help students improve their math skills. Helping my own child with his math homework got me interested in tutoring. I am a patient, caring, and thorough tutor. My goal is to help students develop a better understanding of the theory as well as the application of math. Improving problem-solving skills, enhancing test-taking confidence, and better grades are key objectives. My biggest reward is watching students experience that 'aha moment' when everything clicks and they ‘get it’. If the student gains an appreciation (if not love) for math in the process, that’s another big plus. Often, students know more than they realize. My teaching style is somewhat Socratic in nature to help students develop critical thinking, reasoning, and analytical skills. By asking questions I guide my students through the process rather than just giving them the “cookbook” steps to the solution. The goal is insight and understanding, not rote memorization. Math is not a spectator sport. You can only learn math by doing it and solving lots of problems. I expect students to be committed and actively engaged in the learning process, be persistent, do their homework work, and ask questions.
